I recently saw a key note speaker at an event a committee I’m on hosted and the the speaker was fantastic! Her name is Nora Denzel and it was a privilege to hear her speak on the topic of “The Top 10 Ways Women Kill Their Career”. It was extremely relevant content from her high powered corporate career and she used great examples to really drive home her points. I am going to do a series of blog posts on these ten points she spoke about since I found each one to be of value.
The first one I want to talk about is “Control Your Own Career PR Agent”, aka, control yourself. As women we have tendency to tell people far more details then they really need to know. When you think about how you tell a story and how a man tells a story they are completely different. We elaborate on all the details and of course we can’t leave any details out, where as a man, does a boiled down stick and bones approach.
These two styles are both completely fine but our style may need to take the simplified approach more often then what we do now. When someone asks you a question your response doesn’t need to run through each and every possible scenario that would affect your answer, it just needs to convey your general point and you take up all those extra points with yourself later after you finish your conversation with the person, especially if it’s a person that is of higher seniority then you.
There is a time and place for those long winded explanations and thought processes we love to tell before we get to our point, but sometimes we need to just “take out our scissors and cut it” because everything that comes out of our mouth is a PR statement and every PR statement effects our career.
